Sun's Location Among Best for Life in Cosmos, Study Finds
Citing research that searched simulated universes for life-friendly regions and ranked the Sun's location among the best.
Based on an article by Luke Barnes, Senior Lecturer in Physics, Western Sydney University, reported in The Conversation - Technology. Excerpts from the original are quoted below.
Earth seems like a troubled place right now, but at least our cosmic surroundings appear peaceful. But this is not universally true, as explosions, collisions and other dangers lurk in other places and times.
In our new research, published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, we scoured simulated universes to find the friendliest locations for life.
We discovered something reassuring: the Sun, sitting here in the outskirts of the Milky Way galaxy, is about as good as it gets.
Editorial Opinion
We see the short-term impact on target selection for exoplanet exploration. Allocation of observational resources to stars distant from the galactic center can be considered justified. This could prompt a review of priorities in existing exploration plans.
From a long-term perspective, we see the concept of the Galactic Habitable Zone becoming established in observation strategies. We assess that the coupling of cosmological simulations like EAGLE with planet formation models will advance. The search for life seems likely to expand from stellar neighborhoods to galactic scales.
We see the editorial question as lying in the definition of preconditions for life. The relationship between heavy element abundance and giant gas planets appears to have been sufficiently verified. Since modeling of catastrophic phenomena affects the results, the validity of the assumptions is in question.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the EAGLE project?
- It is a cosmological simulation that tracks the expansion of the universe, gravity, and the physical processes of gas, stars and black holes. It reproduces the universe on scales of hundreds of millions of light-years in detail. This research used its simulated galactic evolution.
- What is the Galactic Habitable Zone?
- It is a concept referring to the places and times within a galaxy suitable for life. Stars too close to the galactic center are exposed to crowding by surrounding stars. Stars too far away are considered poor in the chemical elements necessary for life.
