ASUS’ First Gaming Soundbar “ROG Gjallar” Launches in the US for $600

ASUS ROG (Republic of Gamers) has launched its first gaming-focused soundbar, the “ROG Gjallar,” in the US market. Priced at $600 (excluding tax), it is available for purchase through the company’s official website and Best Buy. Currently, it appears to be out of stock or not yet available; on the ASUS official site, a “Receive Notification” button allows users to register for stock alerts.

The product name “Gjallar” is derived from the legendary horn “Gjallarhorn” in Norse mythology. Its most prominent feature is its design for voice communication in multiplayer games.

Headless Communication Technology for Multiplayer

The standout feature of the ROG Gjallar is the ability to communicate with teammates without using a headset. The included audio control hub has a built-in microphone, and ASUS’s noise-filtering technology isolates teammates’ voices and in-game audio while suppressing ambient noise. According to a report by Mariella Moon on Engadget (staff@engadget.com), it “enables headset-free communication without sacrificing vocal clarity.”

The audio control hub is equipped with an LCD display, allowing direct control of volume, playback, input switching, and EQ profile adjustments.

5.1.2ch Configuration and Wireless Subwoofer

The speaker configuration is 5.1.2 channels, enabling a multi-dimensional 3D sound experience through Dolby Atmos. The subwoofer is a wireless 6.5-inch, 65W unit that uses a dedicated 5GHz connection to the soundbar to prevent latency.

Connection ports include USB-C, HDMI 2.1 (eARC compatible), optical digital, 3.5mm AUX, and Bluetooth 5.3. It is compatible with a wide range of devices, including gaming PCs and Macs, mobile devices, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and televisions. Additionally, two USB Type-A ports are provided for connecting wireless dongles and accessories.

Launch Status and Market Positioning

The ROG Gjallar was listed on Best Buy and ASUS’s official US website, but it is currently not in stock. The gaming soundbar category has fewer entrants compared to headsets or amplifiers, and the $600 price point positions it in the higher-end segment. As ASUS enters this market for the first time, its strategy of highlighting multiplayer communication technology as a key differentiator is evident.

Editorial Opinion

The launch of the ROG Gjallar signifies an expansion of options in the gaming audio market, from “headsets to soundbars.” Traditional gaming soundbars focused on audio experiences for movies and single-player games. By integrating a microphone and noise-filtering technology, ASUS has made soundbars a practical option even in multiplayer environments. This could attract a segment of users who wish to avoid the fatigue of wearing headsets for long periods.

In the long term, this could help accelerate the shift toward “shared experiences” in gaming environments. While headsets provide a personal audio space, they can diminish the immersion of others in the room. A soundbar format can project audio throughout the entire gaming room, naturally enabling a shared experience with spectators or others present. It may also draw attention in contexts like esports viewing and streaming setups.

Whether the $600 price tag represents a worthwhile cost-performance ratio awaits market validation. The determining factor for initial user evaluations will likely be whether the headset-free voice chat quality reaches a level comparable to dedicated headsets.
