Zenwalk Linux Integrates BORE Scheduler

Zenwalk, a Linux distribution based on Slackware, has announced that it will provide builds with the BORE scheduler patched into the kernel, aiming to achieve a truly low-latency desktop experience. According to a report by Phoronix’s Michael Larabel, this is the first major move from the Zenwalk project in nearly two decades.

BORE stands for “Burst-Oriented Response Enhancer,” a scheduler optimized for bursty workloads such as gaming, audio processing, and desktop operations. It is developed as an out-of-tree option and is also available in other distributions such as CachyOS.

Technical Positioning of the BORE Scheduler

The BORE scheduler adopted by Zenwalk is an out-of-tree scheduler that has not been merged into the upstream Linux kernel. It is known for its adoption in CachyOS and is designed to improve responsiveness for desktop and gaming use cases.

While the stock Slackware kernel hangs and drop frames when playing audio during a simple application compile task in background : In my tests this new kernel plays audio flawlessly while a big application compiling and a massive multi-thread media transcode are running in background : it’s day and night !

In other words, while the standard Slackware kernel freezes and drops frames during audio playback while an application is being compiled in the background, the kernel with BORE applied played audio without interruption even during a large-scale compilation and a massive multi-threaded media transcode.

Kernel Build Compatibility

The kernel build provided by Zenwalk is said to maintain compatibility with upstream Slackware. Users of Slackware-based distributions may be able to benefit from the BORE scheduler without compromising consistency with the Slackware package ecosystem.

The BORE scheduler is publicly available on GitHub and can also be tried independently in other distributions. For Linux users seeking improved responsiveness in desktop environments, it is worth attention as one of the available options.
