A latest analysis of the UK data center market has been revealed. According to a report compiled by Karas Plating, a specialist in electroplating and surface coating, the number of server farms across the UK has reached 555 facilities, a figure consistent with the latest data from Statista.

The total IT capacity stands at approximately 1.6GW. In terms of facility count alone, it ranks second globally after the US, with a significant gap between the two countries. However, the data infrastructure concentration within the UK is extremely high.

Overwhelming Dominance of London

The core of the report is the fact that the capital region controls the vast majority of the market. London hosts 219 operational facilities, accounting for approximately 40% of the national total. In terms of IT capacity, this equates to 1,048MW, meaning about two-thirds of the UK’s entire capacity is concentrated in a single city.

The City of London, home to financial markets, and the fiber optic corridor along the M4 motorway leading from the capital to North American submarine cable landing points, have long seen the accumulation of “bit warehouses.” This geographical advantage remains strong today. It also leads in planned expansion projects with 15, and growth is expected to continue.

Capacity Shift to the Regions

On the other hand, the report also indicates a significant shift towards large-capacity infrastructure in regional urban centers. As previously reported by The Register, faced with power shortages and urban planning regulations, developers have begun looking beyond London.

In the South East of England, 62 facilities are operational with 128MW of capacity, and 10 planned projects exist. This area is thought to include locations like the area near South Mimms, where Equinix is planning a large campus along the M25 orbital road.

The North West of England has 39 facilities with 52MW of capacity, and 5 further facilities are planned for construction. This represents the highest number of planned projects outside of London and the South East. Centered around Manchester and Liverpool, this region is emerging as a prime candidate for decentralized sites to meet growing AI computational demand.

In the East of England, there are 45 facilities with 44MW of capacity, while Scotland has 49 operational facilities. Scotland, known for its abundance of renewable energy, may hold advantages for future data center development.

AI Policy and Power Issues

This analysis coincides with the implementation of the UK government’s “AI Opportunities Action Plan.” The government has introduced policies to promote the construction of new data centers, and Karas Plating’s report can be seen as an attempt to identify potential sources of new demand arising from these policies in advance.

However, underlying the trend towards regional sites is the fundamental issue of power supply. In areas near London, connections to the power grid are experiencing long wait times. The government is considering a policy to charge data center operators fees for grid connection applications. Furthermore, while AI superpower ambitions are being pursued, regulations concerning water consumption remain undeveloped, raising questions about long-term infrastructural sustainability.
