Developed by Google DeepMind engineer Vidy Thatte, the browser “Gem” upends the conventional concept of web browsing. Simply entering a URL causes the AI to generate a website on the spot. On July 22, 2026, Thatte himself shared a snippet on X, and just a few days later shared a TestFlight link for iPhone. Gem is an experimental side project that hints at a fundamental shift in the web experience.

Technical Foundation and Operating Principle

At the core of Gem is Google’s Gemini 3.5 Flash Lite model. This model is fast and low-cost, and Thatte noted, “If models are this fast and cheap, there is almost no practical difference between loading a website and generating it in real time.” In fact, every URL entered into Gem is treated as a prompt, and Gemini builds the page on the spot. Even for existing sites, Gem applies its own interpretation; for nonexistent sites, it produces entirely fictional content. According to XDA Developers, the browser offers an experience that is less “browsing the internet” and more “browsing the internet as the model dreams it.”

Appearance Themes and Customization

Gem offers a rich set of appearance options. In addition to dark mode and reader mode, users can choose from more than 20 themes, including Neo-brutalism, newspaper, blueprint, comic book, punk zine, notebook, chalkboard, receipt, teletext, System 7, Wes Anderson style, cyber neon, clay, frost, GeoCities, matrix, museum, Windows 95, terminal, and vaporwave. According to XDA Developers’ blog post, switching themes is instantaneous, transforming the same content into completely different looks. This feature points to new possibilities for web design prototyping and personalization.

Hands-on Test Results and Challenges

XDA Developers’ hands-on report offers concrete results. When entering their own blog site, a Gemini logo appeared, and tapping it revealed more than 20 remix options. Each time they switched themes, the front end morphed, and within seconds the same article was redisplayed with a completely different skin. On another site, the headline was preserved but the body text was entirely rewritten. Furthermore, entering a nonexistent address (their own name) generated a portfolio site in two seconds. Its quality was described as “better than the output of tools that use more time and context.” However, when generating a link to a LinkedIn profile, a fake page with fabricated follower counts and details was displayed. This leaves challenges for the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated content.

Usage Requirements and Cost Structure

Gem is currently a side project in the testing phase. It does not include built-in access to the Gemini API; users must configure their own Gemini API key. The key can be obtained for free from Google AI Studio and becomes usable simply by pasting it into the settings screen. However, the free tier has limits; in XDA Developers’ test, they hit the cap within two minutes. To activate it, the API key needs billing enabled, and in one case a deposit of about $10 was made. Each URL entry corresponds to a request to the model, and usage is billed accordingly. This cost model could be a barrier to everyday use.

This development illustrates how AI could change web browsing. Traditional browsers have served the role of fetching content from servers and displaying it.
