Claude-Only Science Skills Become General-Purpose: 177 AI Agent Skills
K-Dense renames its science AI agent skills collection to "Scientific Agent Skills," expanding from Claude-only to an open standard so 177 skills work with any compatible agent.
The AI agent skill collection for science and research published by K-Dense has changed its name and scope. Formerly “Claude Scientific Skills,” it has been renamed “Scientific Agent Skills,” changing its character into a general-purpose skill collection not limited to a specific AI agent. This move was confirmed in its GitHub Trending listing.
From Claude-Only to a General-Purpose Standard
At the core of the change is making the skill set, previously exclusive to Anthropic’s Claude, comply with the open “Agent Skills standard.” Any AI agent that supports this standard can load them in environments other than Claude. K-Dense explains the change as follows.
Same skills, broader compatibility — now works with any AI agent that supports the open Agent Skills standard, not just Claude.
The skills themselves are unchanged; only compatibility has been broadened. It can be seen as a move that captures demand in research settings that want to avoid dependence on a specific vendor. Regarding mechanisms for teaching AI agents work procedures, our site also covered the arrival of agent-skills, which teach AI agents development processes. The application to science is an extension of that.
Structure of the 177 Skills
The collection includes 177 skills. They cover biology, chemistry, medicine, physics, engineering, earth science, data analysis, and scientific communication. Each skill provides guidance for a specific package, data source, or workflow. A distinctive feature is that it also includes scientific conventions and validation-check methods. Agents can handle arbitrary Python packages and APIs on their own, but explicitly defined skills provide curated documentation and examples. K-Dense explains that this smooths integration with specialized scientific libraries and databases.
K-Dense BYOK as an Execution Platform
This announcement also presented “K-Dense BYOK,” an execution environment for using the skill collection. As a free and open-source AI co-researcher, it runs on the desktop. It lets users bring their own API keys and choose from more than 40 models. It provides a research work environment equipped with web search, file processing, access to more than 100 scientific databases, and all 177 skills in this repository. Data remains on the user’s computer. For computationally intensive processing, it can optionally scale to cloud computing resources via Modal. For research fields that want to avoid sending data externally, this design is a factor in adoption decisions.
Supported Hosts and Installation
The skill collection follows the open Agent Skills standard. It works on Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, Google Antigravity, and other compatible hosts. In addition, it is structured as a portable Agent Plugins package, with plugin.json and a skills/ directory. Any client that supports this standard can load the entire collection as a single plugin. This is seen as a design that lowers the barrier to adoption. The project has published a paper on arXiv, and the skill collection is described as “a library of procedural knowledge for research agents.” Citation of the paper is required when using it.
Impact on Research
In scientific research, reproducibility of experimental procedures and data processing is highly valued. A mechanism in which agents do not proceed arbitrarily but work according to validated procedures works toward increasing the reliability of results. On the other hand, whether the contents of the skills match actual research standards requires verification for each field. If the skill collection comes into widespread use, the standardization of research workflows may advance. It shares the same direction as the trend of releasing agents for free, as reported by our site in Tencent Hunyuan Hy3 Official Release, Agent Opened for Free.
Future Developments
At present, the number of skills is 177, but K-Dense suggests expansion by the community. GitHub stars are positioned as an indicator of the value of maintaining open, reusable research skills. As adoption of the standard progresses, the distribution of skills not tied to a specific host will accelerate. For researchers, engineers, and open-source contributors, this becomes material for determining which agent skill standard can withstand practical use.
Editorial Opinion
In the short term, we expect agent use in science to move in a vendor-independent direction. By placing the skill collection on a standard, room is created to change the choice of host later. Lower switching costs encourage adoption.
In the long term, it strengthens the trend of treating research procedures themselves as reusable assets. As knowledge sharing advances, cross-field verification and reproduction become easier, while quality control of skills becomes a new point of debate.
As the editorial team, we believe the question is who guarantees the scientific validity of the skills. Community-led expansion may create verification gaps in exchange for speed.
