However, during the planning of a recent family trip, he had the idea of whether all these steps could be completed within Google Maps alone. By structuring the itinerary based on the relative positions and travel times of each pin, labeling by category, and even sharing it, the need to keep records in a notebook or calendar is eliminated.

The steps for creating a custom list are clear. From the “You” tab in the Google Maps app, select “New List,” then set a name, description, and emoji icon. Enabling the option to customize list order allows you to manually rearrange destinations. Once a list is created, emojis are displayed on all pins on the map, allowing for visual categorization. For example, selecting a coffee cup emoji makes all cafes instantly identifiable.

Velasco notes that this method allows for early detection of a “bad itinerary.” By checking pin placements on the map, inefficient routes or unexpected detours can be prevented. Furthermore, if plans change, alternative options can be found immediately from nearby pins. Each list item can have notes attached, so for a restaurant, you can record which dishes to order, or for a souvenir shop, potential purchases to consider. The list order can be customized according to priority or timeline, helping manage the overall flow of the trip.

Sharing and Collaboration with Travel Companions

Custom lists can also be shared with other users. By inviting collaborators, they can also add destinations and notes to the same list. This ensures everyone in a group trip can view and update the same plan, preventing information gaps. Velasco described using this sharing feature for trip planning with his family, stating that everyone synchronized their plans on Google Maps.

Traditionally, sharing travel plans often involved somewhat cumbersome processes like sending links or creating PDFs. Sharing within Google Maps requires no cross-platform switching and updates changes in real-time, shortening the feedback loop. Moreover, additions made by collaborators are all visualized on the same map, making plan revisions and consensus-building easier. This has the potential to transform travel preparation from an individual task into a group collaborative effort.

Comparison with Traditional Methods and Challenges

This usage suggests the possibility of replacing apps like Google Keep and Google Calendar or dedicated travel planning apps. With all information existing on the shared context of a map, the risk of losing information context is reduced. However, it is unlikely to fully replace the advanced calendar or reminder functions of existing apps; a complementary approach would be more realistic.

From a technical perspective, Google Maps is strengthening its role as an information hub that connects location data with user intent. Google can be seen promoting a strategy to keep user-generated travel content within its own platform, in addition to search, navigation, and business information.
