Doom Ported to Canon EOS 550D, Playable via Magic Lantern
A GitHub developer has ported Doom to the Canon EOS 550D DSLR camera. Using Magic Lantern firmware, the game is operated via the camera's buttons.

New Hardware for a Doom Port
The developer community continues its challenge of porting Doom to all sorts of “unconventional” hardware. According to a report by Jowi Morales of Tom’s Hardware, the latest achievement is a public port for the Canon EOS 550D DSLR camera by GitHub user lauris-nl. This port runs on “Magic Lantern,” an open-source firmware that unlocks additional features of the camera. While Doom has previously been reported running on bizarre platforms like electric cookers, Apple Lightning-to-HDMI adapters, and even satellites in orbit, this marks the first time it has been run on a digital camera.
The target camera, the Canon EOS 550D (known as the Rebel T2i in North America), is an entry-level DSLR released in 2010. It features an 18-megapixel APS-C sensor, a DIGIC 4 image processor, a 3-inch TFT LCD display, and a rear-facing mono speaker. In lauris-nl’s demonstration, Doom runs smoothly on this setup. Game controls are handled by the camera’s physical buttons. The directional pad moves the character and navigates menus, the SET button acts as both select and fire. The camera’s “MENU” button opens the menu, and the “DISP.” button is used to return from Doom’s menu. Thanks to the built-in speaker, in-game sounds are also reproduced.
The Role of Magic Lantern Firmware
The key to this port is Magic Lantern, an open-source firmware add-on for Canon digital cameras. Originally developed to enhance video recording capabilities and provide professional features, it serves as the execution environment for this Doom port. Magic Lantern does not rewrite the camera’s operating system; instead, it loads as a firmware extension from the SD card. This mechanism allows experimental code to run without compromising the camera’s basic functions. However, compatibility for this port is extremely limited. lauris-nl clearly warns: “Do not install this binary on any other camera model or firmware version.” Specifically, it is intended only for the Canon EOS 550D with firmware version 1.0.9. Running it on an incompatible environment risks bricking the camera.
Installation and Control Details
The installation process is relatively straightforward. First, install a compatible Magic Lantern build for the 550D (version 1.0.9) onto an SD card. Next, copy the released Doom module to ML/MODULES/doom.mo and create an ML/DOOM/ folder. Place a Doom-compatible WAD file in that folder. Insert the SD card into the camera, select “Doom > WAD” from Magic Lantern’s game menu, and reboot the camera to start the game. The developer recommends using a separate SD card for game data, not the one used for photos. This prevents the mixing of game and photo data and simplifies storage management.

The portable porting of Doom has a long history. As mentioned in this article, another developer has successfully ported it to the Canon PowerShot SD1000 / IXUS 70, a compact camera released in 2007. This fact demonstrates the incredible flexibility of the Doom game engine and that older hardware often possesses sufficient computational power.
