Comprehensive Change in View Count Measurement
YouTube has announced that from August 24, 2026, it will thoroughly revise the method for measuring public view counts. It will eliminate the multiple existing measurement systems and standardize on a single metric that counts a view once playback begins, across all video formats.
On its support page, the company explains: “Up to now, YouTube has operated multiple view count measurement systems for different formats. However, because creators asked us to eliminate metric confusion and accurately understand true reach, we are implementing this update.”
Measurement Standard Unified with Shorts
This change essentially means that YouTube will treat regular videos under the same standard as Shorts. YouTube eliminated the minimum watch time requirement for Shorts in 2025, and with this revision, measurement standards for the two formats will fully align. This move is positioned as further increasing consistency with TikTok and Instagram video metrics.
The measurement standard previously used on YouTube will be renamed “Engaged Views” and will continue to be provided for creators who want to know how many times viewers watched a video for a certain amount of time. It will be available in the detailed mode of YouTube Analytics.
No Impact on Revenue
Many creators may be concerned about the increase in view counts, but YouTube has stated clearly that this change will not affect revenue or eligibility for the Partner Program. Revenue calculation will still be based on “Engaged Shorts views” and “Engaged Watch Hours,” as before, and can be checked in the detailed mode of YouTube Analytics.
Notably, YouTube had significantly raised the requirements for joining the Partner Program one week before announcing this change. The fact that the change in view count measurement and the stricter requirements are being implemented simultaneously is an important point for creators to verify.
Standardization of Video Metrics Accelerates
This change can be seen as a culmination of the competition among platforms over their own definitions of view counts. As TikTok and Instagram Reels have adopted designs that count views from the start of playback, YouTube has followed suit.
With the unified definition of a view, it will become easier to compare creators’ reach across platforms. On the other hand, a significant gap remains between the start of playback and actual viewing behavior. How creators use the detailed metrics in YouTube Analytics will likely influence their strategies.

Editorial Opinion
In the short term, this unification of measurement methods will make reach metrics comparable across platforms and affect creators’ video strategies. While it becomes easier to compare reach with TikTok and Instagram Reels, the start of playback alone cannot measure actual viewing effectiveness, so the use of Engaged Views will become increasingly important.
In the long term, advertisers’ evaluation criteria may also change. Since view counts alone cannot grasp the actual reach, the trend toward emphasizing engagement metrics will accelerate, further increasing incentives to create high-quality content. We are likely to see a phase in which advertising effectiveness measurement methods themselves are redefined.
This matter can be seen as part of YouTube’s efforts to increase metric transparency. However, as view count numbers grow, there may be situations where the gap with actual viewing behavior is questioned. Creators need to build their strategies on an accurate understanding of what these metrics mean.
