Apple Wallet Driver's License Support to Expand to Four More US States

Apple Wallet’s digitalization feature for driver’s licenses and state IDs is being rolled out in four new US states: North Carolina, Oklahoma, Utah, and Virginia. This brings the total supported regions to 18 states and Puerto Rico.

According to a report by BeauHD on Slashdot, the North Carolina DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) announced a few days ago plans to launch its mobile ID program within the year. Local media WRAL reports that North Carolina residents will be able to set up digital IDs through the new “NC Wallet” app starting in December. Support for Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet is then expected to be added progressively in early 2027.

Presentation Without Handing Over Your Device

Apple Wallet IDs do not require unlocking your iPhone or handing over your device when presenting them in person. This design helps protect user privacy.

On the other hand, Apple Wallet IDs are not generally accepted by law enforcement. In traffic stops, carrying a physical ID is still legally required. Furthermore, the number of businesses that accept Apple Wallet IDs remains small. At this point, Apple Wallet IDs are positioned as a convenient alternative at participating facilities.

In-Store Use in a Transition Period

The North Carolina DMV states in its official FAQ that “mobile ID is a valid form of identification in North Carolina,” while also explaining that “as businesses such as retailers and restaurants transition to mobile ID, some may not be ready to accept it immediately. Carrying your physical card for now ensures you have a backup when needed.”

According to code reviewed by MacRumors, Apple Wallet IDs will also be rolled out in Oklahoma, Utah, and Virginia, but availability dates have not been specified.

Adoption Challenges and Future Focus

Apple Wallet’s driver’s license feature is being adopted at airport TSA checkpoints and some businesses. However, due to the limited scope of acceptance, users are advised to carry their physical IDs as well. The spread of digital IDs depends on business adoption costs and law enforcement policies. A key focus going forward is how far the mobile ID programs being advanced by state DMVs can expand acceptance among general consumers.

Apple has been progressively partnering with other states, and the pace of expansion has accelerated in recent years. As the infrastructure for accepting digital IDs improves, the requirement to carry a physical card may be relaxed. However, for now, it remains positioned as “merely a convenient alternative.”

In the short term, adding these four states means Apple Wallet’s digital ID will cover many major US states. With North Carolina launching within the year and other states expected to follow in 2027, the increase in supported states will likely affect both users and businesses. On the other hand, the low number of accepting businesses will persist for some time. Therefore, the recommendation to carry a physical ID is unlikely to change.

In the long term, whether digital ID acceptance expands to law enforcement and restaurants will determine the value of this feature. Differing implementation approaches across states and a proliferation of apps could confuse users. For Apple Wallet to establish itself as a standard digital ID platform, Apple will need to strengthen cooperation with state DMVs and create mechanisms to reduce the cost burden on accepting parties.
