Fei-Fei Li, a leading AI researcher known as the “godmother of AI,” pointed out that the greatest risk of introducing AI in schools is the loss of motivation and initiative in learning. According to a report by BeauHD on Slashdot, Li discussed the impact of students’ AI use during an appearance on the science podcast Huberman Lab.

“The absolute worst outcome is that young people’s agency and human-level motivation to learn are taken away by tools,” Li warned. Also known as the developer of ImageNet, she expressed concern that graduates who completely rely on AI and do not try to learn on their own “cannot develop their brains properly.”

Adaptation Over Prohibition

Li opposes an outright ban on AI. She herself struggled with organic chemistry during her college years, and she argues that AI could help support learning in situations where professors and assistant professors do not have time to answer every question.

For students who are actively engaged in learning, AI can be a useful tool. However, it must not replace the “process of thinking and struggling” that is part of learning. According to a TechSpot article, Li said, “We need to find ways to maintain children’s and students’ motivation and agency.”

Impact on Educational Settings

Currently, discussions over AI adoption in education are intensifying. Some schools and educators are moving to impose restrictions out of concern about academic dishonesty using AI. However, Li’s point suggests that the essence of the risk lies not in “cheating” but in “loss of motivation to learn.”

If AI is used correctly, future students could become “superpowered” and far smarter than people today, she said. The key is to position AI as a tool that complements learning.

The impact of AI tools on education is also drawing attention across the broader technology industry.
