First U.S. Sodium-Ion Battery Factory Set for Sacramento
Peak Energy to build America's first grid-scale sodium-ion battery plant in Sacramento. $71M investment, 4 GWh/year, operations start early 2027.
America’s First Mass-Production Plant
A facility that marks a turning point for energy storage technology is coming to California. On July 8, 2026, Peak Energy announced that it would open the first mass-production plant in the United States for grid-scale sodium-ion battery systems, in Sacramento. After a nationwide site search, California was selected over Texas.
The plant will have a total floor area of 183,000 square feet and an investment of $71 million, with plans to ship systems equivalent to up to 4 gigawatt-hours of storage capacity per year when production begins in early 2027. This is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of about 4 million households, and shows that sodium-ion technology has shifted from laboratory achievements to commercial reality.
Strategy of Assembling Chinese-Made Cells
Notably, this plant will handle system assembly, not cell manufacturing. Peak Energy will receive sodium-ion cells made to its own specifications from Chinese suppliers and assemble them into containerized storage systems measuring 30 feet long and weighing 100,000 pounds. Each GS1.1 unit stores 3.1 megawatt-hours, equivalent to the capacity needed to fully charge more than 40 electric vehicles.
The strategy of sourcing cells rather than producing them in-house appears aimed at accelerating market entry while keeping initial investment down. On the other hand, the dependence on Chinese suppliers contains supply-chain risks, and efforts toward cell production in the United States are proceeding in parallel.
Contract Track Record and Commercial Deployment
Peak Energy was founded in 2023 by former engineers from Tesla, Enovix, and Fluence. It has already secured customer commitments exceeding 6 gigawatt-hours, with the following breakdown:
- Supply contract with Jupiter Power for up to 4.75 GWh and up to $500 million
- 1.5 GWh of sodium-ion storage for AI data centers for Energy Vault
- First unit deployed by RWE Americas to the MISO grid in Wisconsin (operational March 2026)
General Motors is developing sodium-ion cells with Peak Energy at the Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center in Michigan. The companies are testing cell formats of 170 ampere-hours and 190 ampere-hours, with a target of domestic production in 2028.
Chinese Players’ Offensive
In parallel with the entry into the U.S. market, Chinese players are also making major advances in commercializing sodium-ion technology. CATL, the world’s largest battery manufacturer, announced the TENER Sodium energy storage system in June 2026, with a rated cycle life of 15,000 cycles and an expected service life of 25 to 30 years. In April of the same year, it signed a supply contract with HyperStrong for 60 GWh, the largest sodium-ion battery agreement disclosed to date.
BYD, HiNa Battery, and Farasis have also begun shipping commercial sodium-ion products. In China, batteries for electric scooters priced at $400 are already on sale, and the technology extends beyond grid applications.
Future Schedule
The first commercial shipments from the Sacramento plant are scheduled for the first quarter of 2027. Deliveries to Jupiter Power, Energy Vault, and RWE Americas are expected to follow soon after. Peak Energy plans to ship more than $100 million in products in 2026, a tenfold increase from approximately $10 million in 2025.
Editorial Opinion
Sodium-ion batteries are inferior to lithium-ion batteries in energy density, but they excel in resource availability, safety, and low-temperature performance. The construction of this plant can be regarded as an attempt to demonstrate in the U.S. market that sodium-ion technology is a practical option in grid-scale storage, a field where cost and longevity are valued more than energy density. In the short term, the focus is on how steadily Peak Energy can deliver its contracted orders of more than 6 GWh by the start of production in 2027. The current model, which relies heavily on Chinese suppliers, could expose supply risks if U.S.-China tensions escalate. In the long term, as CATL’s 60 GWh contract shows, the main market for sodium-ion batteries remains in China. Whether U.S. players can build a domestic supply chain and lead technical standards will determine their competitiveness in this field. Whether the joint development with General Motors leads to domestic cell production in 2028 is also an important point to verify. The editorial board believes that as demand for grid-scale storage grows, the market will see a clearer division between sodium-ion and lithium-ion batteries.
