Spur Intelligence Raises $200 Million for Bot Detection Technology
U.S.-based Spur Intelligence secures $200 million from Insight Partners. Founded by former Pentagon engineers, the startup offers advanced bot traffic and human identification technologies.
U.S.-based Spur Intelligence has completed a $200 million funding round led by Insight Partners. Headquartered in Lake Mary, Florida, the cybersecurity startup provides technology that helps businesses distinguish between legitimate human users and sophisticated bot traffic.
A Visionary Startup Founded in 2017
Spur Intelligence was established in 2017 by two former U.S. Department of Defense engineers, well before the public launch of ChatGPT in November 2022. This foresight highlights the company’s early recognition of the need to differentiate between human and automated activities on networks. Nearly nine years since its founding, this forward-looking investment is beginning to pay off.
Detecting malicious traffic has been a long-standing challenge for corporate security teams. However, the difficulty of this task has grown exponentially in recent years. Thomas Krane of Insight Partners stated, “With the rapid expansion of advanced criminal VPNs, residential proxy networks, and anonymization infrastructures, organizations are increasingly operating with significant blind spots. While they can detect activity, the infrastructure behind it often remains invisible.”
The Turning Point: Bots Surpassing Humans
A recent traffic report published by Cloudflare in June 2026 revealed a historic milestone: for the first time in the history of the internet, bot traffic surpassed human traffic. Cloudflare’s founder and CEO, Matthew Prince, shared on X (formerly Twitter), “We initially predicted this would happen by late 2027, then revised it to early 2027. However, with the rapid growth of agent-driven traffic, bots have now officially overtaken human online traffic for the first time.”
One key factor accelerating this shift is the rise of AI agents. In addition to traditional web scraping bots, agent-based AI systems that autonomously perform tasks on behalf of users are generating significant volumes of traffic. These AI systems are highly programmed to mimic human behavior, making traditional IP-based filtering methods increasingly ineffective.
Spur’s Technological Approach
Spur Intelligence’s solution goes beyond simple rate limiting or IP blacklisting. It analyzes the entire network infrastructure of the access source to determine whether traffic is originating from VPNs, proxies, or data centers. This enables companies to block malicious automated access while maintaining security and preserving the user experience for legitimate users.
The company’s technology is being adopted in industries where fraud prevention is critical, such as financial institutions, e-commerce platforms, and SaaS providers. The newly raised funds are expected to accelerate product development and expand the engineering team.
The Funding Context and Market Environment
The $200 million investment by Insight Partners underscores the continued vibrancy of the cybersecurity sector. The bot detection market, in particular, is expected to expand as AI agents become more prevalent. According to Gartner, by 2027, more than half of enterprise traffic will be automated, suggesting a rising demand for specialized vendors like Spur.
That said, competition in the field is intensifying. Major CDN providers such as Cloudflare and Akamai are bolstering their bot mitigation capabilities, while specialized startups like DataDome and PerimeterX (now Human Security) are gaining traction. By leveraging its unique focus on network infrastructure analysis, Spur aims to carve out its niche in this competitive market.
Editorial Opinion
In the short term, this significant funding round will likely accelerate Spur Intelligence’s product development, particularly improving the detection accuracy of AI-agent-driven traffic. Security departments in enterprises are likely to increasingly consider adopting specialized bot detection solutions alongside traditional WAF and CDN tools. Insight Partners’ involvement signals strong investor confidence in this sector.
From a long-term perspective, the boundary between bot and human traffic will become increasingly blurred. As AI agents begin to browse the web on behalf of users, simply blocking such traffic could risk harming the user experience. Spur will need to focus on providing a system of “identification and permission” rather than outright blocking. By the late 2020s, bot detection may evolve from a standalone cybersecurity feature into a fundamental component of access management.
As editors, we must question how far the industry can go in balancing improved bot detection accuracy with protecting user privacy. The technology’s ability to analyze network infrastructures in detail carries potential risks of misuse in the contexts of law enforcement and surveillance.
